Google kicks my ass

Thursday, February 10th, 2005

Have you checked out Google Maps yet?

I mean, check it out… here’s my old hometown of El Paso, TX. Scroll around a bit using the arrows in the upper left. Zoom in. Check out my old hood.

I just get mesmerized watching the mosaic pattern as it fills in the map. To quote my friend Ryan, “this is a webpage”. This is what I want the Internet to do. Thanks, Google!

Technology trends I’m interested in

Monday, February 7th, 2005

I’ve been watching with lots of interest the developing interest in various Internet technologies:

  • Wikis

  • CMS

  • Solutions integrating both

Turns out that social networking is coming back, too. Have you seen The Face Book? Do you remember when there were tons of social networks? Did they not die out entirely?

If you haven’t seen them, check out Mambo (CMS), Trac (development Wiki/Source control/Issue tracker), Jot (Intranet wiki with lots of ways to add content), Rojo (sharing photos), del.icio.us (sharing bookmarks, and Basecamp (total project/company management). I know these aren’t necessarily totally new projects or anything… but they deserve watching.

This is really exciting. The general trends of sharing and colloboration through technological social networking are just exploding. What a great time to be a programmer!

The continuing adventures of trackback spam…

Thursday, February 3rd, 2005

My ever diligent trackback spammer has finally forced me to turn trackback off entirely for every post on my site. A little SQL into phpMySQLAdmin and voila! No more pings on any of my posts. I like that solution better than renaming my trackback file or anything like that.

I’m also getting a weird PHP error because of my AuthImage captcha I think… it looks like the error only shows up when it’s starting the session for the visitor… after that it goes away. Ah, well.

Spokane, WA

Tuesday, February 1st, 2005

Penny Arcade today mentioned that if it makes no difference ”...where you store, temporarily, your barely animated husk…” then you should consider moving to Spokane, WA. One thing going for it is the amazing proliferation of Free WiFi downtown. 100 square blocks of it. Free.

On another note, I’m still getting absolutely SLAMMED by comment and trackback spammers. It’s made me unconciously avoid my blog for a while… I’ll try and get back to updating this before it dies an ignominious net death. Usually when I find an older website the last post I see is the person apologizing for not posting in a while. Usually the date on that post is something like “November, 2001”. I’ll try not to be that trite.
