Tattoo!

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

Here’s a picture of my new tattoo:

The tattoo on the inside of my left leg.

It’s on the calf of my left leg, on the inside. On Friday, I went in, told the guy what I wanted, said no to the first couple of designs, said, “Ohmygodyesthat’sperfect!” to this one, and an hour-and-a-half later it was on me.

It’s so cool! Thanks to Mike at Atomic on Burnet!

Bush lied—again!

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

John Kerry was in Vietnam. He won three Purple Hearts. He won the Bronze Star and the Silver Cross. The congressional committee that awarded him these prestidgious medals probably knew what they were doing. They don’t just hand these things out.

But the “Swift Boat Veterans” have been giving him hell for it. Who could’ve asked them to turn up the heat during this presidential campaign?

Of course it was someone in Bush’s campaign. I’m sure, when asked, Bush will say something like, “Oh, that Benjamin Ginsberg—what a kidder! I had no idea he was doing that.”

Dammit. Can we talk about real issues? Poverty and taxes, war and peace, oil and economies and health care? Can we talk about foreign policy? There’s so much noise over medals and service in Vietnam… this happened over twenty years ago and there are goddamn more important things to talk about now.

Anyway.

My blog is worth $1,200

Check it out.

Now the question is… who would I sell to?

Nantpad

Monday, August 23rd, 2004

I’m a huge fan of NAnt, and have been actively seeking ways to use it to improve even my non-coding life. I like it that much.

When first approaching NAnt, I first came upon the tool Nantpad, which was supposed to be this great editor for editing NAnt. At the time I used it (more than a year ago), it was nothing more than an XML schema hooked up to a TreeList, with a PropertyGrid thrown in to change things. It wasn’t that great.

However, I’ve been hearing more and more things about it on the NAnt pages, so I thought I’d mosey on over to www.nantpad.com and see how it’s coming along. And, thankfully, it seems to have improved a bit.

But not so much that it should now cost $250 a pop. Nope.

I think Scott Hanselman said it best: “They have GOT to be kidding with the pricing. $250 a seat for an editor to an open source tool? Come on, guys, NAnt is NOT that hard to edit. $25, no brainer. $50 gives me pause. $250 must be a joke. God bless you for trying. Now try again.”

Football

Friday, August 20th, 2004

The latest Madden game is fanfrickintastic. Too bad I don’t know how to play football.

My offense is getting much better thanks to the Madden 101 feature built into the game, but my defense really, really sucks. What’s a 4-3? What’s a 3-4? Why a nickel and not a dime? So, in an effort to improve my game knowledge so my brother doesn’t kick my butt all the time, I found this article about defensive formations. Seems pretty cool, but I need more in-depth help. What’s a zone? What does cover mean? Why is bump-and-run coverage good during some blitzes?

Chalk it up to learning to program computers rather than playing football.

MD5 is broken

Friday, August 20th, 2004

According to CNet, a ”...French computer scientist Antoine Joux had uncovered a flaw in a popular algorithm called MD5…” The flaw allows someone to circumvent the algorithm which, I assume, means that this cryptographically strong one-way hash is now, under some circumstances, a two-way hash.

That really sucks. Here’s the article.

The Dandy Warhols

Friday, August 13th, 2004

The Dandy Warhols’ recent album, “Welcome to the Monkey House” is an incredible piece of work. The production is fantastic, the music itself is catchty and poppy. Really, just fantastic. I’ve owned it for a long time, but I wanted to go public.

Especially after that Evanescence post. Yeesh.
